Awards
Ray Van Houtte Education Awards
Established in 1990 with a gift from the Tompkins Trust Company to the Legacy Foundation (formerly the Tompkins County Foundation), this fund was created to honor retiring Trust Company President Ray Van Houtte and support annual awards that recognize area educators who have shown exceptional ability, effort, and results in improving primary and secondary education in the county.
Awards are recommended by a committee of community members and administered by Tompkins Community Bank CNY (formerly known as the Tompkins Trust Company) and the Legacy Foundation. Presentations are annually in the spring.
James J. Byrnes Awards for Excellence
Originally established in 1985, the Tompkins Trust Company’s Awards for Excellence program was created with a generous gift to the Legacy Foundation (formerly the Tompkins County Foundation) in celebration of the Trust Company’s 150TH anniversary. The program recognizes outstanding contributions to the quality of life in Tompkins County, New York, through religious, charitable, scientific, educational, artistic, literary, or civic achievement.
In 2014, to recognize and honor James J. Byrnes’ retirement as Chairman of the Board of Tompkins Financial Corporation and Tompkins Trust Company, the name was changed to the James J. Byrnes Awards for Excellence, and an additional gift was made in his honor.
